Chris Luehr

Chris Luehr

Burst of Inspiration

Chris Luehr is a project manager and the founder/Chief Joy Officer of Joyful Noize Productions, a nonprofit that organizes foster care events, teaches storytelling, and provides individual coaching for people wanting to rewrite their story. Chris loves spreading joy and helping others find their voice as an extension of his work as a foster and adoptive parent and child welfare advocate.

Chris began this journey when he met Avivah, his now wife. When they first met, she was a single foster mother of two toddlers working a full-time job. At the time, Chris was a free-wheeling bachelor traveling around the country and living out of his Corolla. But opposites attract, and Chris walked the long and winding road from single guy to devoted foster and adoptive father. Now adoptive parents who continue their calling to foster, Chris and Avivah spread the joy, challenges, and the power of fostering to others.

One way is through their non-profit, Joyful Noize Productions (joyfulnoize.net). Chris and Joyful Noize host shows that celebrate local foster care, raising awareness and funds to help provide for children and families in the Twin Cities and beyond. JoyFest, their annual end-of-summer benefit show, has raised thousands to support foster care organizations and families throughout the state. Additionally, his experience as an award-winning storytelling & speaker instilled in Chris the belief that each person holds the power to write/rewrite their own story, regardless of past chapters. Like so many amazing and resilient foster children, we all possess the power to mold our narrative into something better, something joyful.

Recently, Chris and Joyful Noize worked in conjunction with Mixed Blood theater on a series of storytelling workshops to help East African immigrants reframe the limiting stories often imposed on them. Through Project 154 at Mixed Blood, participants worked on rewriting that narrative and sharing their interactions with the health-care professionals in order to improve they way the system works for them. Additionally, Joyful Noize works with businesses, showing them the power of story in connecting with clients, building teams, and rewriting the story in the arena of public relations.

Chris enjoys working with students and professions to help everyone tell their own story. But it all begins with the stories he and his wife create at home with their family, their foster kiddos, and their community.

Jana Shortal

Jana Shortal

Closing Keynote Speaker

Fifteen. That’s how many years Jana has worked as a journalist for KARE 11 news here in Minneapolis – it is also the same amount of time she has spent wondering if she could ever really be that much needed addition to the now defunct Destiny’s Child. But she’s for sure gonna name her first child, Destiny, just to get remotely close to that brand.

Other tidbits. She is from a town you’ve never heard of but it’s a 40 minute drive from St. Louis. She once sold her ten year anniversary gift from KARE 11 to an ex so she could buy a pair of Air Jordan’s.

Jana graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia a very long time ago and had it not been for a persistent journalism professor would have spent her adult life driving the Wienermobile.

You can see Jana weeknights on Breaking The News, KARE 11, at 6:30 pm.

More speakers to be announced soon!
