8:45 - 9:45 - Opening Keynote - Carey Lohrenz: Fearless Leadership

As the first female F-14 Fighter Pilot in the U.S.Navy, Carey Lohrenz knows what it takes to win in one of the
highest pressure, extreme environments imaginable. In 1994, when Carey “Vixen” Lohrenz was deployed to the
USS Abraham Lincoln, there were fewer than 5 female aviators on a ship of 5000 male crew members. Facing
uncharted waters in an intensely male-dominated environment, Lohrenz learned vital lessons in leadership that
followed her into the corporate world. The most successful leaders share a common foundation of principles used
from the flight deck to the front office. The greatest leaders from all corners of the world know how to inspire, use
good judgment, take initiative and make powerful decisions – with integrity. In this program, Carey shares the
fundamentals that helped her win in the cockpit at Mach 2, and can help your team win in business:

  • Be a Catalyst: Make change happen by focusing on what matters most
  • Be Tenacious: Overcome your fear of failure
  • Be Committed to Excellence: Prepare, Perform and Prevail to accomplish seemingly impossible missions
    every day
  • Be Resilient Turn adversity into success
10:00 - 11:00 - Workshop - Commissioner Margaret Anderson Kelliher: Negotiations

Commissioner of Minnesota Department of Transportation Margaret Anderson Kelliher has extensive negotiations experience.

She served 12 years in the Minnesota House of Representatives, where she was elected as the Minnesota House Speaker for four years. While in the Minnesota House, she served 10 years on both the Transportation Policy and Transportation Finance committees. Since 2011, she has been the president of the Minnesota High Tech Association.

While serving as House Speaker, Kelliher oversaw the successful Transportation and Transit Funding package in 2008, creating an investment of new and dedicated funds into Minnesota’s bridges, roads and transit system. At the time of passage, the legislation was a groundbreaking investment in the multimodal transportation and transit system in Minnesota and nationally.

11:00 - 11:30 - Bursts of Inspirational Stories

Sometimes the stories that inspire us do not come from the people with the loftiest titles or most dramatic career journeys. Sometimes they come from the people who are right where we are, doing amazing things. We’ll hear from three individuals about how they lead with intention.

11:30 - 12:30 - Lunch & Networking
Enjoy a delicious lunch while networking with new connections at your table and around the room.
12:30 - 1:30 - Skill Building Workshop Sessions

Everyone comes to Aspire to Lead with their own goals for the day. During our breakout sessions, you will have the opportunity to choose the workshop that best fits your personal development goals.

Building Your Strategic Impact
As women progress in their careers, we are often told that we need to be seen as more strategic in order to break through to a higher level. Led by Susan Heinlein and Marian Powell of Bamboo Partners, this session will teach you how to make the shift from problem solver to strategic thinker. Our fantastic facilitators will share a model for building strategic capabilities and lead us through exercises to create individual action plans to become more strategic.

A More Effective Way to Network
Do you ever attend awkward networking happy hours only to leave without having made any meaningful connections to help strengthen your network? Do you sometimes catch yourself feeling ambivalent or even reluctant when it comes to investing time toward building and sustaining your network? Have you taken time recently to evaluate how well your network is actually working for you? In this workshop, Molly Stiehm will share a better framework for building and nurturing your network. You’ll learn strategies to help shift your mindset on your journey to becoming a better networker, along with practical tips you can incorporate immediately to network more effectively. You will discuss networking as a vital skill, and at the end of the session, you will leave with a game plan for improving your professional network so that you can provide more value for your organization, your team, and yourself.

Power Plays: Leveraging your Untapped Power
Do you want to navigate change, conflict, projects or career transitions more successfully? Each of us has unique talents and abilities that we can leverage to our advantage. This breakout session, led by Doreen Johnson and Stephanie McGovern, will help you identify your powers within and unleash them to get more done with less effort. We’ll explore the fundamentals of power and influence, types of power, why we both desire and resist power, and build strategies to use our individual and collective power.

Leadership and Risk Taking
Everyone has fears. Throughout our lives we develop brain patterns and physical behaviors in response to specific experiences that catapult us into an emotional response. To transcend away from the typical flight or fight response and be open to taking risks, leaders have to learn to practice positive responses, behaviors, and strategies to transform your reaction and relationship with fear. This session, led by Tonya  Hampton, will teach the audience how to connect with their fears, strategize, transform and deliver effective results.

1:45 - 2:30 - Panel Discussion

When you think of iconic brands, key attributes immediately come to mind – McDonalds, Coca Cola, Nike, Disney, Tiffany (!). What are the key attributes that come to mind when your colleagues and customers think about you, and wouldn’t you like to be the one to define them? But where to start…

Our panelists are believers in the power of personal brand – professionals who have worked to define what makes them unique and valuable. We’ll hear their stories of successes and failures as they share what they have learned in the process of crafting and communicating their personal brand.

2:30 - 3:15 - Closing Keynote

Hear from news anchor Jana Shortal. You can see Jana weeknights on Breaking The News, KARE 11, at 6:30 pm. The Breaking the News host was profiled on the Great Big Story series “SHINE,” which features the authentic voices of women celebrating their identities. The episode, called “How a News Anchor Broke the Unspoken Dress Code,” tells the story of how Jana came into her own style and her authentic self in the world of TV news. In Jana’s own words, “the idea we can do it all, all by ourselves, is a fallacy. We need each other. So as I look at where I am today from the rearview mirror, I see a story of the helpers, not a story, of me.”

3:30 - 4:30 - Networking Reception
We invite you to join us for a networking reception which will include complimentary drinks and appetizers. This is a great time to connect with other conference attendees, make new connections and share your insights with others.
